Types of modern doors

Modern doors are contemporary furnishing solutions suitable for any setting, capable of separating domestic spaces with style. Our catalogue includes: glass, wood and lacquered doors (with matt or glossy finish), with smooth leaves or finished with engraved designs featuring harmonious or geometric silhouettes.

The different opening mechanisms

Now that we have briefly outlined the different door opening mechanisms, let’s take a closer look at them, identifying the most popular solutions implemented:

  • hinged: a classic par excellence. The standard solution, perfect in the majority of cases. As it opens, the leaf performs a range of action around its side vertical axis, occupying space inside the room. It can be selected push or pull, towards the left or right, as required. It is defined as modern when it is fitted with concealed hinges and magnetic locks;
  • sliding inside the wall: equipped with a counter-frame recessed inside the wall (in masonry or plasterboard), it does not occupy space inside the room, as the leaf shifts and disappears inside the wall. Ideal for granting access to small rooms: laundries, bathrooms, utility rooms, broom cupboards, storage under stairs, etc;
  • sliding outside the wall: unlike the pocket sliding door, this door does not require any construction work to be carried out to recess the frame, but it displays an upper track that allows the panel to shift parallel with the wall, occupying a space the same width as the leaf, which cannot be furnished. The fully glazed models with metal profiles are extremely trendy;
  • folding: the leaf is cut in half and folds open thanks to concealed hinges fitted along the cut. The overall dimensions are halved (compared to a hinged mechanism), the parts fold up on one side, decreasing the width of the passageway;
  • pivoting: this is a special mechanism, used for important projects and it proves extremely scenic if the leaf is very large. The presence of pivot hinges allows the panel to swivel around an asymmetrical axis of rotation;
  • turn and slide: the panel performs two movements: it shifts and swivels around a central pin. The leaf moves to one side occupying a small amount of space inside the two rooms.

7 useful tips for choosing

Which modern doors should you choose for your home?
In laminate or lacquered? Glass or wood? And what type of opening mechanism should you order?
Here are some tips:

  • assess the amount of space available to identify: dimensions of the leaf, opening mechanism and direction. Use standard models in the majority of cases, adopt customised full-height solutions for specific scenic effects (they are ideal in flush-fitting doors). Start with the hinged door models and opt for space-saving opening mechanisms (sliding or folding) if the amount of space is limited and you want to eliminate the space occupied by the door inside the room;
  • choose the material and finish based on what the windows and floors are made of and try to match the colours and style to generate a sense of chromatic and stylistic continuity or some contrast;
  • keep an eye on your budget. There are cost-effective, high-quality solutions, which provide great value for money, such as the white laminate models;
  • design every detail on paper, before placing your order: direction of opening, dimensions, and assess in advance whether to adopt models sliding inside the wall which require masonry work to be installed;
  • to separate an open-plan setting functionally, opt for glazed partition walls including full-height, even better if fitted with sliding leaves;
  • glass doors are excellent to light up windowless rooms such as: broom cupboards, corridors, bathrooms and storage rooms;
  • do not neglect the details, such as: handles, hinges, locks, skirting boards, since every single element helps define the style of the door.

Finishes and materials available

How do you recognise a quality modern door?
Obviously from its materials and finishes, as well as its shape. Let’s look at these first two aspects:

  • models in genuine wood, with an understated yet technical appearance, and a sturdy and stable structure. Slatted leaves are extremely popular, as are contrasts between wood grains, mirror-finishes and smooth lacquered finishes with impeccable details and metal engravings, cornices and elemental decorations;
  • lacquered, either matt or glossy, open pore or block coloured, with a smooth panel or instead a decorated one, pantographed and engraved. The processing gives rise to stylised relief elements, to tone-on-tone or contrasting designs. The door plays the starring role and can be colour-customised, according to the extensive RAL range. There is no shortage of wood and glass models, the latter available in various finishes (sand-blasted, engraved, extra clear, etc.);
  • in synthetic material, effetto legno (wood look). Affordable and trendy doors, lightweight yet certified. Our models feature completely water-repellent structures, antibacterial treatments and sophisticated details. The leaves are bordered on all four sides to give visual continuity to the finish material. The surfaces replicate genuine wood in a highly realistic way, including at tactile level, with relief surfaces;
  • glass: doors which afford maximum visual continuity between settings without neglecting privacy and noise abatement. The glass we use is tempered safety plate glass, which is available in a host of different finishes and decorations. The trend demands all-glass leaves with metal details, which are refined, elegant and precious.
